ABA Chartered Clubs, Units, and Sections plan and conduct Grade C, Grade B, Grade A, and Sectional tournaments throughout the year. These tournaments are both friendly and challenging competitive events for all levels of bridge players, from new players to Grand Life Masters.
Where there is a Unit (three or more clubs located within a 35-mile radius), chartered clubs sponsor Grade "C" and Grade "B" tournaments. Clubs are entitled to one monthly sanctioned "C" game (one-session event played at the local club). Clubs within a Unit must hold at least one Scholarship and one Headquarters benefit game each year, along with a Grade "B" tournament.
All of the clubs within a geographical area form a Section. (In March 2022, a merger of the Northwestern Section with the Western Section became effective.) Currently, there are four geographical sections within the ABA. The Section Vice President issues sanctions for all events held by clubs and units in the Section. The Section is also entitled to hold two Sectional Tournaments each year. Sectional tournaments may be at most five days. Sections draw their competitors across the U.S., mainly from the immediate area. Grade "B" and Grade "A" regional tournaments may run for one to four days, and most players are drawn from nearby areas. e "A" tournament.
NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS—The ABA national body sponsors two national tournaments per year: one in the Spring (usually near Easter) and one in the Summer (July/August). The Spring tournament lasts seven days, and the Summer tournament lasts ten days.
The Regional Sanctioned Tournaments include Grade A, Grade B, and Sectional games. Masterpoints are awarded according to the game level. National games yield the greatest number of master points awarded per game, followed by Sectional, Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C, respectively.
Independent Clubs (where there is no unit) are entitled to one sanctioned Grade "C" game per month, are required to hold at least one Scholarship and one Headquarters benefit game each year, and a Grade "A" tournament.
