ABA TOURNAMENTS

 


ABA CHARTERED CLUBS

ABA chartered Clubs, Units, and Sections, plan and conduct Grade C, Grade B, Grade A, Sectional tournaments throughout the year. These tournament offer both friendly and challenging competitive events for all levels of bridge players, from new players to grand life masters. 

UNITS

Where there is a Unit (3 or more clubs located withinn a 35 mile radius) chartered clubs sponsor Grade "C" and Grade "B" tournaments. Clubs are entitled to one sanctioned "C" game per month (one session events played at the local club).  Clubs within a unit are required to hold at least one Scholarship and one Headquarters benefit games each year, and a Grade "B" tournament.

INDEPENDENT CLUBS

Independent Clubs (where there is no unit) are entitled to one sanctioned Grade  "C" game per month, are required to hold at least one Scholarship and one Headquarters benefit games each year, and a Grade "A" tournament.

SECTIONS

All of the clubs within a geographical area form a Section.  (In March 2022  a merger of the Northwestern Section with the western Section became effective.)  Now, there are currently seven geographical sections within the ABA. The Section Vice President issues sanctions for all events held by clubs and units in the Section. The Section is also entitled to hold two Sectional Tournaments each year. Sectional tournaments may not exceed 5 days.  Sections draw their competitors from across the U.S. but, mostly from the immediate area. Grade "B" and Grade "A" regional tournaments may run one to four days and most of the players are drawn from nearby areas.

NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS

The ABA national body sponsors two national tournament per year, one in the Spring (usually near Easter) and one in the Summer (July/August). The Spring tournament is usually 7 days and the Summer tournament 10 days.

The Regional Sanctioned Tournaments include Grade A, Grade B and Sectional games. Masterpoints are awarded according to the game level with National games yeilding the greatest number of masterpoints awarded per game; followed by Sectional, Grade A, Grade B and Grade C, respectively.
